How to Find the Right Personal Injury Lawyer

Finding the right personal injury lawyer for you is a lot like finding the right significant other. You should feel comfortable with your attorney and be able to trust his or her judgment and advice. The right attorney for you may not be the same attorney as the one your neighbor or mother uses.

You will likely also have a different attorney for different types of cases. Often, the lawyer that prepares your will should not be the lawyer that you use for your personal injury case. So, how do you find the right personal injury lawyer for you? We have a few suggestions.

1. Look for an attorney that practices personal injury law.

Like doctors or other professionals, lawyers have specific areas of law in which they frequently practice in. In many cases, a lawyer will focus on one area and may not have done any work in other areas of the law. Personal injury is often an area of the law where an attorney will specialize.

Find an attorney that specifically lists your type of case on their website or other advertising material. If you need an attorney after a car accident, be sure that the attorney you speak with specializes in car accident cases. The same rule applies to other personal injury areas like slip and fall cases, dog bites, or premises liability.

2. Look for an attorney that can bring your case for you.

If you have been injured due to someone else’s carelessness, then you may be entitled to compensation. The attorney that you want is someone who does plaintiffs’ work—that is, the person who was harmed, not the person who actually caused the accident.

The attorney on the other side is called the defendants’ attorney. Often, lawyers that practice in personal injury will specialize in one side or the other.

3. Do your homework.

Ask friends and family about attorneys that they have used in the past. Do they have any suggestions? Do you have friends or neighbors who are attorneys? Even if they do not practice personal injury law, they may be able to refer you to someone who has.

Make a list of all of these suggestions and then research online. Look at the attorney’s website and case information. You should also be able to find rating websites that will tell you how other clients have rated this person. Look for someone who has done cases like yours previously and who has great ratings.

4. Schedule a meeting.

Take the time to meet with a few potential attorneys on your list. Choose the one that you “click” with. You will have to share intimate details of your life and medical history with this person. Would you be comfortable doing that?

You should also find someone who is willing to talk you through the law and answer any of your questions. If your potential attorney uses long and complicated words or phrases that you cannot understand, then that isn’t the lawyer for you.

You want to be able to know what is going on at all times in your case. Is the lawyer you just met with going to help you with that goal?

Finding an Attorney Who Cares

Above all, you want to be sure you have found an attorney that cares about you and your situation. If your attorney doesn’t understand you, or, worse, doesn’t believe your side of the story, then he or she probably isn’t going to be very effective.

You want an attorney who understands that your accident or injury may have just changed your life entirely. You also want an attorney who is willing to work hard for you to get you the compensation that you deserve.
